On 13 June 2023 Kaukus Kelautan DPR RI held a Small Group Discussion (SGD) on Marine Debris. The program was graced by Hon. Budisatrio Djiwandono, Hon. Anggia Ermarini, and Hon. Bobby Rizaldi, alongside resource persons from the Ministry of National Development and Planning/BAPPENAS, and international partners.

Discussions were held about the inadequate budget allocated for waste management in Indonesia, and the need to increase central government budgets for the provinces and regencies. Regional governments also need to play a critical role due to regional autonomy and varying levels of understanding about waste management across local governments. Often, waste is overlooked and considered a community responsibility, leading to government neglect.

Effective waste management is achieved through central and local government funding and the utilization of community groups for waste processing at landfill sites. Decentralizing waste management allows for fresher, sortable waste, reducing transportation needs. Educating the public on waste reduction and recycling is also critical.

To help solve the issue, a National Solid Waste Management Platform is being developed. It aims to clearly define the roles of each institution and local agency, and who are the primary implementers and service providers. Waste management is a cooperative endeavor requiring the participation of various stakeholders, including the government, businesses, and the public. Key elements to successful waste management include funding, socio-cultural factors, and technology. Success in addressing these elements will result in a structured and efficient waste management system.
