On October 27, 2022, ICCF Mexico jointly with The Ocean Foundation held the Briefing Session "Towards a legislative framework for blue carbon in Mexico".

The briefing was held under the leadership of Senator Raúl Bolaños, Co-Chair of the Mexican Ocean Caucus and President of the Environment, Natural Resources Committee.

The objective of the meeting was to promote a space for exchange between legislators and specialists from various key sectors in order to analyze the challenges and opportunities towards the development of a legislative framework on blue carbon and generate technical inputs to contribute to science-based and informed decision-making.

The briefing session was also attended by Senator Ricardo Monreal, President of the Political Coordination Board, Senator María Merced González and Deputy Edna Díaz; as well as experts from the federal government, civil society and academia.

Senator Ricardo Monreal highlighted that in one-year the blue carbon ecosystems sequester an amount of carbon, equivalent to almost half of the total emissions generated by transport on a global scale. In addition, these ecosystems are the habitat of a great diversity of species and help to maintain the quality of the water on the coasts.

Senator Raúl Bolaños-Cacho mentioned that the Senate is developing studies to Integrate multisectoral perspectives on blue carbon and thus advance in a solid and effective legislative framework.

Senator María Merced González acknowledged that Mexico does not have a blue carbon market. However, she added, the National Commission for Protected Natural Areas promotes, in a participatory perspective, actions that contribute to the conservation of blue carbon ecosystems for the benefit of local communities.

Finally, Deputy Edna Díaz, expressed that it is essential to allocate federal resources to finance programs and projects that promote the conservation of ecosystems that capture blue carbon.

Legislators participating included Senator Ricardo Monreal, President of the Political Coordination Board, Senator Raúl Bolaños, Chair of the Environment Committee, Senator Maria Merced Gonzalez, Member of the Environment Committee, and Deputy Edna Diaz.
