The Oceans Caucus Foundation is pleased to welcome Senators Dan Sullivan (R-AK) and Gary Peters (D-MI) as the Honorary Co-Chairs of the 115th Senate Oceans Caucus. Senators Sullivan and Peters join Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) as Co-Chairs of the Senate Oceans Caucus, succeeding Honorary Co-Chairs of the 114th Senate Oceans Caucus, Senators Corey Booker and Roger Wicker.
Senator Dan Sullivan was sworn in as Alaska’s eighth United States Senator in 2015 and serves on four Senate committees: the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee; the Armed Services Committee; the Environment and Public Works Committee; and the Veterans' Affairs Committee. Prior to his election, Senator Sullivan served as Alaska’s Attorney General and Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources. He is currently an infantry officer and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and has served in a variety of command and staff billets on active duty and in the reserves over the last 21 years. Sullivan also served in the Administration of President George W. Bush as the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Economic, Energy, and Business under Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and as a Director in the International Economics Directorate of the National Security Council staff at the White House.
Elected in 2014, Senator Gary Peters represents the State of Michigan in the U.S. Senate. In the 115th Congress, Peters serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee and the Joint Economic Committee. Senator Peters served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives prior to being elected to the U.S. Senate. For more than 20 years, Peters worked as an investment advisor, and at age 34, he volunteered for the U.S. Navy Reserve, where he earned a Seabee Combat Warfare Specialist designation and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
Senators Sullivan and Peters are the new Chairman and Ranking Member, respectively, on the Senate Commerce Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries and Coast Guard. The subcommittee's jurisdiction includes "[responsibility] for legislation and oversight of matters that impact our oceans and coasts including: coastal zone management; marine fisheries and marine mammals; oceans, weather and atmospheric activities; marine and ocean navigation; ocean policy and NOAA. The Subcommittee is responsible for overseeing the Coast Guard, which includes the safe and secure operations of vessels entering the United States or transiting through our Exclusive Economic Zone and the enforcement of maritime laws to support maritime commerce and protect marine living resources."
In these roles, both will be highly influential in the way the Senate deals with issues pertaining to conservation and marine management in the 115th Congress, and the Oceans Caucus Foundation looks forward to their leadership on these issues.
The Oceans Caucus Foundation would like to thank Senators Booker and Wicker of the Honorary Co-Chairs 114th Senate Oceans Caucus for their outstanding leadership on marine management and conservation issues and know they will continue to be assets and leaders in the ocean community going forward.
